An annual checkup is important for a menopausal woman even if you do not want hormone replacement therapy or other prescription treatments. If you are more interested in natural health care alternatives, you may want to find a doctor who specializes in, or at least is knowledgeable about these areas. Some women prefer to visit both a doctor and a natural therapist, so that they can have the best of both worlds. This is a good idea, although unfortunately it may be a quite financially challenging to some.

Women who do not experience unpleasant symptoms pf menopause may be reluctant to consult a doctor, or may think there is no reason to, since they do not need or desire to have any form of "treatment". It should be emphasized that menopause is not a disease; and it is important not to medicalize it by taking an overly interventionist approach. However, the risk of certain serious diseases rises rather sharply at this time of life, so regular physical examinations become more important than ever for the maintenance of your good health.

Whatever your situation, a good doctor should take your individual perspective and needs into account. In addition, because the change menopause produces in your body is gradual, both you and tour physician should be aware that your needs and feelings may change over time. There is no need to rush into any form of treatment or to feel pressured by a doctor; the goal is to stay in tune with your body and work with your physician to optimize your health.

It is advisable that you consult a gynecologist or a doctor who has a special interest in women's health when you first experience premenopausal symptoms. If you are one of those lucky women who experience no premenopausal symptoms, you should visit your doctor once you realize that menopause is taking or has taken place. Your first visit should be around 30 to 40 minutes long, thus allowing time for a full history and medical examination.

Before deciding what medical treatment, if any, is appropriate for you, your doctor must take a medical history and perform all physical checkup and a battery of tests. At the time of menopause, your ovaries, adrenal glands and fat tissue may still produce enough sex hormones to keep you feeling well. In 10 years after menopause, your levels of sex hormones will gradually decline and at some point, you may feel a desire to try hormone replacement therapy. Your doctor would then want to know if there are any risk factors in your family history that could influence the decision to begin hormone replacement therapy. For instance, if you have a strong family history of breast cancer - if first-degree relatives have had the disease and especially if it was diagnosed before menopause - your doctor would be more conservative about giving you estrogen replacement. Conversely, if you have a family history of osteoporosis or cardiovascular disease, your doctor would be more likely to advise you to take estrogen replacement on a long-term basis, as this would reduced your chances of following in your relative's footsteps.

Possible Connection Between Decreasing Levels of Estrogen and Weight Gain

The exact connection between estrogen and weight gain is largely unknown. But, a scientific study conducted by the Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, seems to indicate that decreasing estrogen levels can cause weight gain.

Many women have found that it is harder to lose weight during peri-menopause and menopause. In fact, many women gain weight as estrogen levels decline during these years, even though they may have made no changes in their diet or exercise programs. We know that our calorie requirements decrease with age, but we don�t know why. If a woman (or a man, for that matter) expends the same amount of energy throughout her life by remaining physically active, then why would caloric requirements decrease? The answer may be found in something called the �resting energy expenditure�.

The resting energy expenditure is the number of calories that the body naturally burns during periods of rest. Dietary experts know that people, who increase their physical activity, not only burn calories during the exercise, but increase the number of calories that the body burns at rest. Curious researchers wanted to know if there was a connection between levels of estrogen and weight gain, and if this connection was related to the resting energy expenditure.

In order to determine if estrogen levels alone played a role in resting energy expenditure, researchers enrolled a group of young women, not near the age of menopause and measured their resting energy rate. The women were then given drugs that block estrogen production, while being advised to make no other changes in their diet or exercise regimen, and the resting energy expenditure was measured again. The results showed a decrease of nearly 100 calories per day in resting energy expenditure. These results seem to indicate that menopausal decreases in estrogen and weight gain are connected.

Most women notice a change in body shape, which may or may not contribute to weight gain during menopause. A woman�s body has a tendency to gradually change from pear shaped, hips wider than the waist, to apple shaped, waist approaching the same width as the hips. No one knows if this change in body shape is related to decreasing estrogen levels or another part of the aging process, but most people know that it does frustrate menopausal women.

Hormone replacement therapy does not seem to prevent weight gain among women who use it. Neither does it normally stop the change in body shape. Some women notice these changes and others do not. Genetics may play a role, as could nutritional factors and of course diet and exercise programs. It is not a foregone conclusion that decreasing levels of estrogen and weight gain must accompany each other. In fact, dietary changes that are often recommended to relieve symptoms of menopause may also help prevent weight gain.

Plant foods are low fat and highly nutritious. They are often referred to as nutrient dense foods, because the number of vitamins and minerals they contain is so much higher than their caloric content. Plant foods contain a number of other compounds as well. One of these compounds is called phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens have an estrogen like effect on a woman�s body and can reduce some of the symptoms associated with decreased estrogen levels during menopause.

Isoflavones are a type of phytoestrogen and you may see isoflavones listed as an ingredient in dietary supplements designed for women approaching menopause. These dietary supplements alone may not prevent weight gain during menopause, but changing your diet from one that consists primarily of meats and processed foods to one that consists primarily of nutrient rich low calorie plant foods will definitely make a difference. This type of diet is recommended not only because of the possible connection between decreased levels of estrogen and weight gain, but also by the American Heart Association, because it is good for the heart and by the American Cancer Society, because it reduces the risk of many types of cancer. Hot flashes are one of the most talked about symptoms of Menopause. About 80% of the women in America experience hot flashes and night sweats during menopause. The body produces less estrogen and progesterone during menopause, but menopause is not necessarily caused by these fluctuating levels. Hot flashes could last from a few seconds to a few minutes; and in some cases is known to last half an hour to one hour. Most women have hot flashes and night sweat lasting from two months to two years, and in some rare cases they continue to have them for a decade, after menopause.

The severity of hot flashes that a woman experiences depends on the lifestyle and psychological factors. Some women really sweat, while others may only perspire. Following hot flashes, some women have headaches, feel dizzy, weak, tired or lose sleep, experience palpitations and skipped or erratic heartbeats. It is always advisable to consult your doctor, whether if these are symptoms of menopause or a sign of normal illness or a medical disorder.

Hot Flashes and Night Sweats - The Causes and Remedies
Many women cope with hot flashes, while and others have difficult times. Hot flashes and night sweat can cause interrupted sleep, insomnia, panic attacks, anxiety and depression, among others. Categorized as mild, moderate or severe; mild hot flashes produce a feeling of warmth for less than a minute, and with little or no perspiration. Moderate flashes produce more warmth and a little perspiration and last for two to three minutes. Severe hot flashes produce intense heat and sweat, and last longer.

Spicy food, alcoholic drinks, hot drinks, white sugar (can also cause palpitations), hot weather, stress, hot tubs and saunas, tobacco, marijuana and unexpressed anger could cause hot flashes. Hot flashes are known to deplete Vitamin B, Vitamin C, magnesium and potassium in our bodies, and there is a need to increase the intake of these nutrients, including calcium. For mild hot flashes, a daily dosage of 400 to 800 IU of Vitamin E is recommended.

Most women start a daily dose of 600 to 800 IU of Vitamin E with Vitamin C, and when the flashes subside, take 400 IU. Vitamin E has been effective on 50% to 60% of women, and it takes around two to six weeks for the effects to show. Vitamin E is contraindicated with certain medical conditions, such as, diabetes, high blood pressure, or with rheumatic heart conditions, history of hypertension, etc, and it is advisable to seek a doctor's opinion.

Hot Flashes and Night Sweats - In Non-Western Cultures
Less than 10% of women in non-western cultures, such as, in Japan, Mexico, and India, experience hot flashes and night sweat. It has been linked to high soybean consumption, which stimulates estrogen production. Herbs, such as, ginseng, vitex agnus castii, licorice root, black cohosh, dong quai, blue cohosh, false unicorn and sarsaparilla, can alleviate hot flashes.

Like all major turning points in women�s lives, reaching menopause can be challenging and even a little frightening. Numerous women report that menopause comes along with gastrointestinal distress causing uncomfortable symptoms such as indigestion, flatulence and sudden bloating. Not only are these annoying and embarrassing, they can also be quite painful.

During menopause, gastrointestinal bloating is caused when air fills the abdomen, creating a full feeling. Even though your stomach remains the same size, your pants probably feel tighter and your waistline just seems to keep expanding. Excess intestinal gas is produced by bacteria in the intestines. Sugar located foods often contribute to the growth of this bacterium.

Poor digestion, a lack of lactose - an enzyme that breaks down food and liquids, can cause gastrointestinal distress as well. Gas distress can also be rampant during menopause due to lack of estrogen. Medical studies have suggested that a menopausal woman's diet can be to blame - particularly too many high sugar foods including fruit, and certain vegetables such as cauliflower, onion and broccoli that create even more bacteria in already inflamed intestines.

How many times have you hear the phrase �senior moments�, �fuzzy thinking�, �old-timers disease� or �mental-pauses�? How many times has it been in association with misplacing your car keys and an attempt to shrug off the fear that perhaps you are beginning to �loose it�?

In midlife, both men and women are concerned about what is happening to our minds. We look at diseases and conditions that affect older individuals and wonder what is to become of us? I�ve heard many people say they�d rather have a heart attack or get hit by a car than develop Alzheimer�s Disease.

Alzheimer�s Disease (AD) or any of the dementias strike fear in almost all middle age, and virtually all older adults. Many have likened it to being imprisoned in a body with a mind that is no longer functions�like someone took away the key and lost it.

AD is a serious problem and it will become more of a problem as our generation � The Baby Boomers - age. While we do not have the answers as to what causes it, there are some things that can be done to protect our brains.

Briefly, Alzheimer�s Disease is a progressive brain disorder that causes a gradual loss of a persons memory. It goes further than that in that it also causes personal and behavior changes. While there are several forms of dementia, AD is the most well known. The damage is irreversible and as of the time of this writing, there is no cure.

Forgetting where you have left your keys, or that something was in the oven is not necessarily a sign of AD. More likely, those are signs of living a stress life and tying to do many things at once. Despite popular belief, we do NOT multi-task very well.

While the cause is not known, we do have a few pieces to the puzzle.

On average, it seems that 1/3 of the risk for dementia is due to genetics. That means that 2/3 of our risk is due solely to our environment and life style choices that we make today! In other words, it appears we may have a good amount of choice in reducing our chance of developing AD.

Here is a list of things you can do now to keep your brain happy.

Keep your body healthy. Protecting your body against illness that damages your blood vessels (high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, smoking, strokes, etc) will also contribute to the health of your brain.

Avoid substances that have toxic effects on your brain such as air pollution, lead, smoking, excessive alcohol, and street drugs. Think of these things as �brain pollution�.

Avoid injury. That means avoiding falls, wearing helmets and seatbelts, and avoiding motor vehicle accidents.

Learn to manage stress. Excessive exposure to stress causes negative long term effects in the brain and the body.

Exercise your brain � use it or loose it applies here! (See below)

Include foods in your diet that are high in antioxidants such as prunes, raisins, blueberries, cranberries, spinach, broccoli florets, avocados, oranges, red bell peppers and eggplant to name just a few.

Consider taking antioxidant supplements to protect your brain. This can include a MVI, Vitamins C and E and omega 3 fatty acids. (Discuss this with your health care provider to see what is appropriate for you).

Your brain is no different than your body. It needs exercise in order to stay fit. There are lots of programs, under various names out there, and basically they do the same things. You want to burn new neural pathways, stimulate the release of chemicals and just give it a good workout. Make sure it�s something challenging.

Here are some suggestions to get you started.

Use the opposite hand when you brush your teeth and hair in the morning.

Go through a certain portion of your routine with your eyes closed.

Travel a different route to work.

Acne and Menopause

Menopause has some very interesting symptoms. Women can experience insomnia, hot flashes, extreme night sweats, irritability, anxiety, headaches, achy joints, mood swings, trouble concentrating, and even acne. Some women never experience the last one, but for at least ten percent of all menopause patients, pimples and blemishes are a real problem. Some women haven't had a zit since their teen years, and suddenly their faces are full of them. The truth is, though, those teens and the women going through menopause have a number of things in common. Acne is typically caused by hormone swings, which occurs on an extensive basis during both puberty and menopause. It is hard for most women to regress back to their teen years of worrying about a pimple in the mirror when they're struggling to deal with all of the other symptoms of menopause.

Acne during menopause occurs for much the same reason that acne occurs during any other portion of life. The skin has a number of sebaceous glands. These glands produce skin oil, scientifically known as sebum. Skin cells are consistently regenerated. Old ones die, and they are quickly replaced with new ones. When the body's hormones rage, hormones that include estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA, the sebaceous glands become sensitive and started producing more sebum than they need to. More skin cells begin to die. As a result, not only do you have more facial oil than you need, you also have more dead skin cells than you need. Your body cannot keep up, and it cannot get rid of the unwanted materials fast enough. The hair follicles on the face get clogged with the oil and the dead cells. The sebum production increases again, and your teenage acne flairs up anew.

Those terrible white heads occur because all skin has bacteria that live off of the sebum. Then the sebum builds up under the skin, as occurs with too much sebum production, the bacteria and the oil combine. An inflamed area builds up with white puss underneath. Blackheads also occur when the bacteria and oil combine under the skin, but with a blackhead, air leaks in. As a result, the material that is caught in the pore turns black. Menopause acne isn't entirely like all other acne, though. Both the sebaceous glands and the hair follicles on the face contain an enzyme. This particular enzyme is able to turn estrogen into androgen testosterone. This can cause more oil production than all other sources combine. This means more breakouts than you probably had in your teen years.

The acne you experience during menopause can be overly frustrating. You, however, do have some ways to try to clear it up. Your first step is to examine your diet. You need to be eating foods that are high in calcium and fiber. Also, be sure you cut back on your fat and the carbohydrates you eat. Carbohydrates can take your body's insulin and turn it into androgens. As we talked about before, androgen can increase the sebum production in the skin. One other change you might want to make in your diet is to be sure that you are drinking eight to ten glasses of water each day.

In addition to making some dietary changes, you might want to consider adding some supplements to your life. There are so many vitamins, herbs, and minerals widely available that can help you get rid of the oil production in your body. Most studies suggest that you should add Vitamin B and Vitamin C to your diet. Your diet and supplement things aren't the only things you should consider, though, you should also clean your skin at least twice each day. You should exfoliate on a regular basis, as this can help get rid of those dead skin cells. Also, be sure to use a toner to close up those open pores that are so famous for collecting the things that create acne.

Menopause is a difficult time for any woman because this indicates the termination of her reproductive life. There is a psychological aspect that comes along with the cessation of this important biological function and this includes a woman's adjustment to losing fertility. Alongside this psychological factor, there are also physical symptoms caused by hormonal changes that a woman undergoes and that could be unpleasant at times.

Menopause usually lasts a year or two and is characterized by the cessation of regular menstrual periods. This usually occurs any time between the ages of 36 and 56 with 48 as the most common median age. Contrary to popular belief, menopause doesn't end late because of an early puberty neither is there an early onset of menopause because of a late puberty. These are only tales and are untrue. Menstruation sometimes stops abruptly, but more commonly, it follows a cycle that includes a few months of irregular bleeding followed by normal losses and then another few months of irregular bleeding until the menstruation finally ceases. A woman can be interpreted as having an end to her menstruation if she is under 50 and stops bleeding for a year or if she is over 50 and stops bleeding for a period of six months. Even during the entire menopausal period, there is still a slight chance of pregnancy that is why contraceptive precautions are advised to women who do not want to get pregnant.

Women who undergo hysterectomy or the removal of the womb experience cessation of menstruation even before reaching menopause. About 19 percent of females 15 years old and above undergo hysterectomy as a treatment for gynecological problems including pain. In cases where the ovaries are still intact, the secretions of female hormones continue until such time as natural menopausal changes occur. Estrogen replacement therapy is usually administered when the ovaries are removed.

Aside from the psychological effects that accompany menopause, there are different physical problems that a woman may experience. These physical problems vary from woman to woman. Hot flashes, sweats and loss of lubrication in the vagina are the major physical symptoms of menopause. Low estrogen levels are believed to be causing these problems. To be able to live a more normal life despite the hassles that come with menopause, you should seek medical attention if you suffer from any of these physical problems:

And, there are sites promoting vitamins, herbs, botanicals and other natural therapies for hot flashes. In this article, we hope to provide enough information to help you weed through the massive amount of available information and learn how to get rid of hot flashes, without drugs or hormones.

The common belief is that hot flashes begin when estrogen production by the ovaries slows down and that they end after the body becomes accustomed to the lower level of hormones. But, no one knows for sure. Some doctors believe that lifestyle, stress level and dietary habits play a role. The latest research has revealed that there are genetic differences between women who experience more severe hot flash symptoms than others. So, as with most health issues, genes probably play a role.

Pharmaceutical companies have tested the effectiveness of different drugs for relieving hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms, since hormone replacement therapy is now considered to carry more health risks than benefits. Next we look at the most recent research related to these remedies promoted by hot flash websites, as well as the historical use of these products in traditional medicine, where applicable.

Soy beans, tofu, soy flour, soy milk and other soy products have been suggested as dietary supplementation for menopausal women. Soy isoflavones are a type of phytoestrogen or �plant� estrogen. Dietary supplements containing soy isoflavones are increasingly popular. Some experts have suggested that adding soy products to the diet is probably more effective than taking a supplement, but the clinical research performed thus far indicates that supplements containing isolated soy isoflavones provide more relief than eating food containing soy.

Dong quai is a Chinese plant sometimes referred to as �female ginseng�. It was used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, anemia and high blood pressure. It is a good source of vitamin B12 and has been shown to have pain relieving, anti-inflammatory and sedative effects. However, scientific studies have shown that it increases the growth of breast cancer cells. Thus, women who have a history of breast cancer in themselves or in their families should avoid this product.

Chaste berry or the berry of the chaste tree is cultivated in the Mediterranean. Its scientific name is vitex agnus-castus. It is an herbal treatment of PMS and is considered to be a tonic for both the male and female reproductive systems. It is believed to support increased testosterone production in men, but it is unclear what affects it has on a woman�s metabolism. Several scientific studies have confirmed that it effectively relieves breast pain and tenderness.

While preliminary research suggests that ginger root may be effective for many medical conditions, including boosting the immune system and reducing inflammation, eating or taking supplements containing ginger is probably not the answer to how to get rid of hot flashes. In fact, the spice could trigger hot flashes in some women and it can cause mild allergic reactions, including bloating, flatulence and tightness in the throat.

Tribulus terrestris is an interesting plant that seems to increase the production of the hormones estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. It has been used as an alternative to synthetic steroids by athletes and body builders. Results of scientific research have been mixed.

Damiana may not be the answer to how to get rid of hot flashes, but studies have shown that it can improve and enhance sexual function in menopausal women. Maca root is promoted by some hot flash websites, but there is no scientific research supporting its use. As a food source, it contains a number of vitamins, minerals, trace elements and fatty acids, but it is doubtful that encapsulating the powdered root would provide these health benefits.

Red clover, sarsaparilla and black cohosh were used traditionally by Native American healers to correct hormonal imbalances. Scientific studies have shown that all three effectively reduce hot flash symptoms more than placebo. Black cohosh appears to be the most effective and research supports its safety for use in women with at risk of breast and/or endometrial cancer.

The need for managing hot flashes may show up in a woman�s late thirties. From my own experience, I can say that they have a tendency to get worse as menopause comes closer and that during the first few years, they have a tendency to come and go. Most women are only bothered by hot flashes for a couple of years following menopause. Some women never experience them at all. Some research suggests that the difference in severity of hot flash symptoms is genetic, but women who need help for hot flashes and sweating really don�t care what causes them. They just want them to stop.

The first step that the better women�s clinics recommend for managing hot flashes is related to lifestyle. Women who smoke have more symptoms of greater severity than women who do not. Likewise, women who drink a lot of caffeinated and/or alcoholic beverages have more symptoms. A symptoms diary can be helpful to determine what triggers hot flashes in individual women, since the triggers vary. For instance, some women have found that spicy foods can bring on hot flashes, but other women do not find that food is a factor.

Regular exercise is often recommended as help for hot flashes and sweating. Of course, physical exercise will increase sweating during the activity, but most women find that night sweats are less severe when they are physically active during the day. The connection is not clear, but it is probably because exercise increases levels of hormones and other �feel good� chemicals circulating in the bloodstream.

Certain plant components are effective for managing hot flashes. These have become increasingly popular, since the release of research that confirms the health risks associated with hormone replacement therapy. Urinary Tract Infection � Cause and Cure

Urinary tract infection is caused by bacteria contamination of the urinary tract. The main type of bacteria is Escherichia coli. Do you wake up during the night soaking wet because you're sweating so much? Are you so hot that you kick off the blankets and even the sheet? Do you lie there tossing and turning until you finally go back to sleep just as the alarm begins to buzz?

When this scenario started repeating itself in my life, I had just turned forty and was running a cat on a national campaign. My stress level was very high at the time, so I automatically assumed that I was waking up because I had so much on my mind. But one morning when I woke up, I suddenly realized that I had slept all night. Why had I been able to sleep that night but not others? I wondered.

I began to monitor my sleep pattern, and as I did, I noticed that for half the month I would sleep all night, while the other half, I would lie awake tossing and turning. Some nights were much worse than others. Another thing I noticed was that I seemed to become grumpy more easily and that sometimes my tone was harsh.

This pattern continued month after month and coincided with my menstrual cycle. Yet I had always thought menopause was for woman in their fifties-not their forties! I have since learned that many younger women have to deal with the symptoms of early menopause-hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings-as well as with the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease if they happen to be taking hormone replacement therapy (HTR).

Due to the history of breast cancer in my family, I had been told that it wasn't safe for me to take hormones, so I began to seek natural alternatives in the hope of improving my mood and getting a full night's sleep on a regular basis. I tried adding soy, flaxseed, and evening primrose oil to my diet. I also tried to boost my intake of vitamin supplements, but I found myself forgetting them. I think I may have managed to take all of them for three days before my busy mind forgot about them. I tried to exercise, too, but because my schedule was already so full, I wasn't very successful at setting aside an extra thirty minutes three times a week As simple as it sounded, I never really got started.

As many wise women have said, there's no reason really that we should accept these symptoms as inevitable: menopause is not an illness, it's merely another stage of life. Have Early Menopause Symptoms Evaluated By Your Physician

Early menopause symptoms include changes in menstrual periods and increased symptoms of premenstrual syndrome. These can show up as early as age 35.

Changes in menstrual periods that may be related to the reduced estrogen levels that accompany the years before menopause include heavy or lighter flow, missed periods and spotting between periods. However, these symptoms can also be caused by other more serious conditions, including cancer, so the importance of regular check-ups can not be overemphasized.

As a woman ages her ovaries produce less estrogen, because there are a decreasing number of egg cells inside of them. We are born with a finite number of egg cells and one of the primary functions of estrogen is to prepare the uterus to receive a fertilized one. Other organs produce estrogen, as well, but to a lesser extent. Thus, as the time of menopause approaches, which literally means the cessation of menses or menstruation, and estrogen levels in the body decrease, a woman may experience a variety of different symptoms.

One of the early menopause symptoms is an increased number of premenstrual symptoms. Premenstrual syndrome or PMS is related to decrease levels of estrogen, as well. The amount of estrogen produced by the ovaries varies during the month. The least amounts are produced during the days immediately preceding a period, but the levels begin to gradually decrease during the last two weeks of the cycle. Women who suffer from migraine headaches report more frequent and severe episodes during this time. Women who had migraines during puberty often find that they accompany early menopause symptoms, as well.

A woman�s experience with menopause and the years leading up to it varies. Either some women are less sensitive to changing hormonal levels or other factors may be at play. Poor diet or poor nutrition can cause irregularities in menstrual cycles at any age. Caffeine and alcohol can increase symptoms of PMS, trigger migraines and hot flashes in some women.

Not usually one of the earliest signs of menopause, hot flashes or flushes are believed to be related to reduced estrogen levels or changes in circulation. Most women experience them at some point during the years leading up to menopause. When they occur at night, they are referred to as night sweats and can interrupt sleep. Women have found that certain things increase their number or severity. Alcohol and caffeine were mentioned above, but spicy foods, cigarette smoke, stress and even tight clothing can also bring them on.

If other more serious conditions have been ruled out, many early menopause symptoms can be relieved with dietary changes, lifestyle changes and herbal supplements, like black cohosh, green tea and red clover. Breast Cancer - Risk Factors And Symptoms

Breast Cancer. For most women it is something they dread hearing, but it is something more and more will hear in their lifetime. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women, but also occurs in a small number of men. It is most commonly associated with those above the age of 50. It can be contracted by those in younger age groups, but the risk is not as high as for those in the older age range.

There is currently no defined cause for breast cancer, although there are factors which can put someone at a higher risk. Some risk factors are unavoidable, while some are not.

Unavoidable risk factors include;

- Gender: Women are more susceptible to contracting breast cancer than men.

- Age: The older a person gets, the greater the risk factor.

- Family history: If a family member has previously contracted the disease, the chances of another family member contracting it rises considerably.

- Genetic predisposition: If the body carries a gene associated with the disease, the odds can increase greatly. This gene can be passed down through generations. If a parent is known to carry a genetic predisposition, it is also possible for their children to carry the gene as well.

- Race: White women are much more susceptible to contracting breast cancer than black or Hispanic women.

- Prolonged exposure to estrogen: Those who enter the menopause at a more advanced age than normal (55+) are believed to have a higher risk factor. Estrogen is believed to play a part in causing breast cancer to form.

Factors which can be controlled include;

- Weight: As in most cancers, those who are overweight place themselves at a higher risk of cancer. Anyone overweight would be advised to begin an exercise program and improve their diet as soon as possible. Especially if coupled with age factors. Always be sure to consult with a doctor before beginning a rigorous exercise program.

- Smoking: Again, as with other cancers, those who smoke are putting themselves at a higher risk for cancer. Quit smoking as soon as possible to reduce the risk of cancer.

- Drinking: Those who drink more than one alcoholic beverage per day are thought to be at greater risk of breast cancer. If you struggle with alcohol, seek help to quit and cut the risk. If that is not possible, try to limit yourself to only one alcoholic beverage per day.

There are many symptoms, which may point to breast cancer. Finding a lump or hardening of the breast, or areas near the breast, is the most common symptom. Other symptoms can include a change in breast size, discharge from the nipple itself, tenderness and even a change in how the breast feels. If you experience any of these symptoms, you are advised to visit a doctor as soon as possible.

If caught in the early stages, breast cancer is much easier to combat and in most cases can be beaten. If allowed to reach an advanced stage, the survival rates are much worse. That means screening and preventative measure are essential. If you are over the age of 50, a mammogram is an essential tool in breast cancer prevention. Have your doctor schedule one at appropriate intervals. If you find a lump, have it checked. A little prevention can go a long way in avoiding an unnecessary battle with the advanced stages of this dreaded disease.

Every woman, ready or not, gets to experience menopause. If you�re currently one of those women you at least have the comfort of knowing that roughly 50% of the population either understands your situation or soon will. Another upside is that with so many people experiencing those annoying hot flash symptoms, there are many resources available that help relieve them. We�ve all heard of the dreaded "hot flash symptoms," but what other symptoms will you be experiencing during menopause?

Another major menopausal symptom is the mood swing. One moment you�re fine and the next you�re definitely not. You may recognize your lack of patience and increased irritability, but find it incredibly difficult to control or care to control. After the hot flash symptoms and mood swings the vaginal dryness, weight gain, energy loss, and skin and hair changes begin. Depending on severity, these symptoms can be relatively simple to alleviate or a little more stubborn. However, compared to hot flash symptoms, osteoporosis and heart and vascular disease are considerably more significant menopausal problems that women need to address.

Almost ninety percent of women in the United States will experience hot flash symptoms of some sort. These symptoms will continue for about a year or two after their period stops. Some 20-50% of these women will continue to have hot flash symptoms for many more years. However, the intensity and frequency usually diminish over time.

So what exactly are hot flash symptoms? Hot flashes vary considerably in each woman. Some women experience hot flash symptoms that last for up to an hour off and on all day long. Others may only have a hot flash that lasts a minute or two once or twice a day. Most women report hot flash symptoms between six and eight in the morning and from six to ten in the evening.

Hot flashes may seem to feed on themselves. During a hot flash, you are already sweating, thanks to the rise in body temperature. But get ready to keep sweating. Once your brain registers that your temperature has risen it sends out a message to your heart, blood vessels and nervous system to "cool down!" In turn, your body gets your sweat glands going even more in order to release sweat to cool you off. These hot flash symptoms can be quite miserable. Your body�s drop in estrogen stimulates your brain�s response and can change the temperature of your skin by even six degrees Centigrade! It really is a vicious cycle of sweating.

However, hot flash symptoms need not be out-of-control. Since you will be living with hot flash symptoms from one to ten years, action will need to be taken to maintain your body at a comfortable temperature. With the plethora of available resources, you can fight these hot flash symptoms head on.

The old medical treatment was hormone replacement therapy. Because of the recent studies outlining the risks of HRT, most women these days use a combination of herbal remedies and natural strategies. While hot flash symptoms can be very uncomfortable, they are easily controlled with these types of remedies. During menopause, every woman should put together her own hot flash relief strategy. Doing so will insure a much easier and healthier menopause.

Menopause Weight Gain - Why It Happens and What You Can Do About It

Nearly every woman struggles with weight gain during perimenopause and menopause. It's not usual to put on 10 to 15 pounds without any changes at all in your caloric intake or activity level. Very few middle-aged women are thrilled about gaining weight. Not only does it make us feel less attractive, but it can have adverse affects on our overall health, as well. Recent studies on weight gain during and after menopause also show that it can increase a woman's risk of breast cancer.

What causes menopausal weight gain? Age itself is the biggest factor. As we age, our metabolism slows. We tend to become less physically active, which decreases muscle mass and slows the metabolism even more.

Many of us tend to eat out more often, as well. We're busy and we can afford to. We may no longer be concerned with providing healthy meals for our children at home or setting a good example for them. We may eat alone more often, which can also push us to cook less and eat fast food more often. Restaurant portions are generous and we do not always choose wisely. This can quickly add up to a ten pound time bomb.

During perimenopause, your ovaries produce less estrogen and your body looks for other places to get it. Fat cells can produce estrogen, so your body works to convert calories into fat to increase its estrogen levels. Unfortunately, fat cells don't burn calories the way muscle cells do, which causes you to pack on unwanted pounds.

Interestingly, the International Journal of Obesity reports research showing that less sleep leads to increased body weight. A lack of sleep results in reduced levels of leptin, a protein that regulates body fat, and increases in ghrelin, which stimulates food intake. Therefore, a lack of sleep can increase hunger and body fat. As a result of frequent night sweats, women transitioning through perimenopause are often sleep deprived, which can contribute to weight gain.

Without a doubt, exercise is the single most important and effective method of preventing or reducing menopausal weight gain. Exercise builds muscle and muscle burns more calories than fat cells. In addition to playing a huge roll in controlling weight, regular physical activity can also relieve or reduce the impact of many other uncomfortable physical and emotional effects of perimenopause, including anxiety, mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats and insomnia. Weight bearing exercise is also critical in the prevention of osteoporosis in older women.

Your body's hormones have a direct impact on your metabolism, appetite, and fat storage. During menopause, hormones can fluctuate wildly, making weight control extremely difficult. Once again, exercise can help. It stimulates the adrenal glands to convert the male hormone androstenedione into estrogen, thereby naturally boosting your estrogen levels and helping to restore hormonal balance.

In addition to exercise, consider boosting or balancing your estrogen levels in other ways to help control your weight and to help alleviate other menopausal symptoms. A variety of over-the-counter products, herbal remedies and supplements and prescriptions are available to you. Even though many of them are labeled "natural", they may not be right for you. Be certain to consult with your medical provider before undertaking a course of treatment.
